Don’t let Councilmember Margaret Chin divide and destroy our community by promoting high rents, racism, and displacement
The City’s 2008 Rezoning Plan protected the majority white East Village, but excluded our community of Chinatown and Lower East Side. When the community rose up to demand equal protection, the City asked us to “wait patiently.” In the past 8 years developers flocked to Chinatown and Lower East Side to build high-rises, driving up rents and real estate taxes.
We created the Chinatown Working Group (CWG) to limit the heights of new developments and to require 100% low-income housing on public land, but Chin and de Blasio say it is “too ambitious” while they get lots money from the same developers who want to push us out to bring in the rich. They refuse to support it, ignoring that even CB-3 supports the full plan.
On September 29, Chin lead a special CB#3 meeting to give rezoning protection for only historic Chinatown, discriminating against Latino, African American and even other Chinese residents in the rest of our community. By slicing up our Plan, they leave unprotected large areas like NYCHA and the waterfront where high-rises are going up. Chin is creating racist divisions, pitting Chinese against Blacks and Latinos. This only benefits the developers and further accelerates the destruction of our community.
PROTEST Margaret Chin’s Racism
** Thu. September 29, 6:30pm **
M.S. 131 @ 100 Hester Street
Margaret Chin is willing to sell out Chinatown and Lower East Side and act as the watchdog for Mayor de Blasio’s racist housing policy. We demand:
- Margaret Chin and Gale Brewer to stop slicing up CWG Rezoning Plan, stop their discrimination against Latinos & African Americans, and stop dividing our community
- Community Board 3 to honor and reaffirm their support of the full CWG Rezoning Plan
- Mayor de Blasio to pass the whole CWG Rezoning Plan immediately!
