Four hundred home care workers and supporters amassed outside the midtown office of Governor Hochul on March 12th to protest her protection of the racist and sexist exploitation of the 24-hour workday and the rampant theft of women’s wages. They denounced Hochul for illegally awarding a multi-billion dollar CDPAP contract to the Chinese American Planning Council (CPC) that will proliferate violence against women in NYC, and condemned her Department of Labor’s illegal dropping of home attendants’ wage theft cases. Home care agencies such as CPC and UJC owe hundreds of millions of dollars in stolen wages to home attendants, many of whom now live with permanent injuries after working years of sleepless 24-hour shifts.
NMASS member Luz Estrella spoke, saying, “I worked 24 hour shifts for 12 years. My agency, United Jewish Council (UJC) still owes me $427,000 dollars in stolen wages because Kathy Hochul’s Department of Labor illegally closed my case! Kathy Hochul is helping these agencies get away with destroying our lives! Now she gives this big contract to CPC, the worst agency that stole millions of wages and spreads 24 hour shifts! Kathy Hochul is against women, against Latinas! She must stop this violence against women workers!”
Join workers in demanding that the Governor (1) enforce labor law, (2) cancel her multi-billion dollar CDPAP contract with the Chinese American Planning Council (CPC), and (3) pay the workers back now!
