Just two years ago, people said that our Ain’t I A Woman coalition would never end the 24-hour workday.
- Now, support for the NYC NoMore24 bill is a precondition for political candidates, and a priority for the new City Council.
- Agencies are splitting shifts for 24-hour care and workers are winning back wages.
- On Jan. 2, the New York Supreme Court ruled that Governor Hochul’s Department of Labor must reopen hundreds of wage theft cases that it had closed.
- The homecare workers’ fight has inspired others, young and old, to organize. It exposes how the state-sponsored 24-hour workday shatters the minimal standard of labor in our country for ALL workers. Tech workers, artists, construction workers, students, teachers, adjunct professors, restaurant workers, social workers and others have joined to fight against having to choose between being underworked—not being able to find a job—and being overworked—forced to work inhumane hours.
- Homecare workers are now mobilizing to pass the NY Health Act. Whether uninsured or on employer or union insurance, Medicaid, or marketplace insurance, all are trapped in worsening working conditions—longer hours that destroy health and lower wages.
