NMASS is a registered 501(c)(3) not-for-profit workers’ center located on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Your contribution supports a movement of working people who envision control in our workplaces and neighborhoods, and control of our time and our health—demands that unify us across race, trade, language, and immigration status. Since 1996, our mission has been to build working people’s leadership to fight exploitation, systemic racism, and displacement from the ground up.
NMASS demands more than what special interests say is possible, and wins. Even two years ago, people said that our coalition would never end the 24-hour workday. Now, support for the NYC NoMore24 bill is a precondition for political candidates, and a priority for the new City Council. Home care workers are pressuring Governor Hochul to enforce the labor law and direct her NYS Department of Labor to adjudicate their cases, and agencies are agreeing to provide 24-hour care in split 12-hour shifts. Home care workers are winning back years of wages owed for the 11 unpaid hours they worked per 24-hour shift, and getting the control over their time that they need in order to care for their patients.
NMASS builds the leadership of workers. More than ever before, the home care workers’ fight is inspiring others to organize. Together with a growing coalition, we have raised public awareness of the 24-hour workday and how it hurts ALL workers by shattering the minimal standard of labor in our country. Tech workers, artists, teachers, adjunct professors, construction workers, students, cultural workers, and service workers have joined to fight against having to choose between being underworked–not being able to find a job–and being overworked–forced to work inhumane hours. Doctors, nurses, social workers, and city retirees have joined to fight against the devastating effects of the 24-hour workday on people’s lives, calling for universal healthcare.
The attack on immigrants is intensifying, but NMASS members are not backing down. Restaurant workers picketed their workplaces and celebrated a victory after winning back stolen wages, spreading the word to other workers to support the passage of the SWEAT Bill (Securing Wages Earned Against Theft) in the New York State Assembly. Home care workers mobilized citizens and immigrants from across industries to protest Governor Hochul’s upholding of violent 24-hour workdays and rampant wage theft. The governor’s promotion of these exploitative conditions has destroyed the health and families of hundreds of thousands of workers, making New York a sanctuary NOT for immigrants, but for exploitative employers and insurance companies. As workers, we are standing up for our rights, declaring, “we refuse to be criminalized by Trump, AND we refuse to be slaves under Hochul.”
